Portal 2

Chell as seen in Portal 2
The sequel to Valve's single player 2007 hit, Portal, is now here. Portal 2 is here and it lives up to the hype around its release. The game takes place 10 years after the original. You still play Chell, the main character, and this time you are challenged with harder more mind boggling levels. The game tends to focus on the backstory of Aperture Science, while revealing some other startling information. I won't go farther then that, as I don't want to spoil anything for you guys.

The game mechanics are the same for the most part. The newest addition to the game would be the new "Gels". Gels give you either enhanced speed or enhanced jumping height. There is one more gel, but I will let that one go as it may be a potential spoiler.

The great thing about the game is that the facility almost seems alive as you play through the game. Walls are moving and being fixed constantly. In addition, junk is being disposed of constantly. One thing I found to be a nice addition was how music seemed to correspond with your actions in the game. The faster Chell moved, the faster the music got, and the more intense it became. As for Co-op, I can't speak about it yet as I haven't gotten to play that part of the game. Hopefully I will be able to play co-op mode. From what I have played though, this game is definitely worth the buy.

Refer-a-Friend on Xbox Live

Recently, Microsoft has started to offer some promotions for inviting a friend to upgrade to gold. It would seem Microsoft just can't get enough of our money. So here is the deal they provide you: Bring a friend to xbox live gold, and you get something special. This can range from microsoft points, to games, or to a free month of xbox live gold. For example, today's offer is "The Maw". By referring someone, you will be given the XBL title "The Maw". You only receive the promotion if the person you invite upgrades within 30 days of you inviting them. However, there is a slight catch. If the person does not wish to receive information about xbox live, you will not be able to refer them. It is a good idea in general, but I think the execution is poor. Why would a friend of yours wait for you to refer them? If they wanted to be a part of xbox live gold, they would have upgraded already. Plus, they get nothing for you referring them. It does not provide incentive. I think it should be more like DropBox which gives both the person who invites, and the person receiving the invite, 250 MB of space. Microsoft has the right idea, but just needs to work on execution. If you wish to refer a friend, click here.

Here Come The Sales

With Thanksgiving only two weeks away, many stores and online sites are starting to cut their prices. If you haven't already, start putting money aside for use towards these great sales. Gamers who use Steam know the crazy price cuts Steam does during the holiday season. PC builders tend to go to NewEgg, who in this case has already started cutting prices. Then there are people who like to shop for clothing etc.. However, I am not really sure where they go since I don't do that on a regular basis. Although the deals may be out of this world, always remember to spend your money wisely. Most of the time these sales have a strict no refund policy. Last thing you want to do is go buy a Solid State Drive and find out you go the wrong size (60GB instead of 100GB). If you are a Gamer with Xbox Live, I suggest you keep an eye on Games for Windows Live. Tomorrow they will be updating the site with over 100 new titles and much more. More on that topic tomorrow. Is there anything you plan on buying during the holiday sales? If so what is it? Leave a comment below if you are.

Unfairly Rated

With every new game released comes a new rating from various rating sites. However, when a new game is released more multiple platforms, multiple ratings are given. Yet, these ratings are usually all based on the same principles. Then, after giving the rating, they compare it to the other consoles. For example, Fallout New Vegas was given an 8.5 for Xbox 360, but a 9 on PC. Why? Because the PC handled the graphics better and let the game run smoothly. I don't find this fair at all; it is obvious an Xbox 360 cannot stand up to a PC. And yet, the reviewing sites always make a comparison between PS3, Xbox 360, and PC. To compare these things is like comparing Apples, Oranges, and Plumbs. They are all different. In my opinion, each game should be rated on what the console can handle and compare it to one of the best made games for that console. Yes, the PC is most likely the best when it comes to performance, and the PS3 probably has the best graphics, but they are not the same well oiled machine; thus, they should each be rated on what they CAN do and not what they CAN'T do. If you always look at the negatives of a game, you don't see the greatness that may be within it.

Use Your Body!

Today marks the launch of Xbox 360 Kinect. Kinect is a revolutionary way to play games. Games for Kinect require a camera, which will run you about $150. The camera is an attachment that you plug into your Xbox 360 and then place above or below your TV. In a sense it is just like the Wii motion bar, except this camera is different. The Kinect camera scans your body and picks up all of the movements. Thus, every game for Kinect will use your body for the controller. There are currently 17 launch titles, they range from playing soccer to dancing. The idea of Kinect is to get you up off the couch and get moving. Whether or not this will take off as a good product is yet to be seen. Most hardcore gamers will not want to accept this new addition to the gaming world. I personally won't be picking this up as I see no point in having it. Unless there is a major game title coming to Kinect, and by major I mean one made by a well known company like Bungie, I won't be getting it. Those who like the concept of Wii will most likely levitate towards this. Plus, Kinect does not only work in game, it also works outside of the game. When at the Xbox 360 dashboard, you can use your hand to scroll through menus by moving it up, down, left, or right. It even works in certain channels on the Xbox 360, like last.fm, or ESPN. Kinect is here just in time for the holidays, so lets see how it fairs.

Happy Halloween to everyone, if you want leave a comment saying what you will be dressed up as.

Three Major Games This Week

Start this week off with three of the hottest titles. On Tuesday the games Rock Band 3, Fable III, and Star Wars the Force Unleashed II will be released. These are some of the holidays most wanted games. Rock Band 3 will be the first music game ever that actually teaches you how to play an instrument. Only down side to that is you must purchase an instrument controller fitted special for the game.  I myself would like to learn guitar, so in the future I hope to buy the guitar that doubles as a controller and a real guitar. Then there is Fable III, the sequel to Fable II. In the game, you play a brother/sister of a tyrant king, and you must lead a revolution against him. Finally, there is Star Wars the Force Unleashed II. This game, being the sequel to Star Wars the Force Unleashed, is an over the top jedi game. You are gifted with huge amounts of the force, allowing you to take out more then just a storm trooper. You play as Starkiller, Darth Vaders secret apprentice, who has found out he is a clone. He is being held captive by Vader until he is needed again, but he escapes. The story is his adventure through the galaxy to find out more about himself. All three of these games are very exciting, and I can't wait to get them. Are you going to get any of these games? Leave a comment below stating which ones.

Game Purchase: Fallout New Vegas

Today marks the release of the new game, Fallout New Vegas. PS3, Xbox 360, and PC owners get ready to enter the post apocalyptic world of Fallout. This time, the story is set in Vegas. The gameplay remains the same as previous fallout games. I personally have never tried my hand at the Fallout series, but thought I would give this one a try since my friend convinced me to. In addition to release, it has been announced that DLC is already in the works and will be released later on. Although my schedule is quite busy, I plan on making sometime, if possible, to play this game. For those of you who have the game already, what do you think of it?

P.S Tomorrow's update will be sent out around 8PM since it will be on the Back to the Mac conference.

Stop Chewin' My Wires!

Those of you who have cats, you know how frustrating it can be when they get to your wires. Well, as a gamer, it is the worst thing for me. I have a tendency to leave wires on the floor, out in the open, everywhere. My most recent encounter with wire chewing, my xbox headset. My cat chewed straight through the wire. Some of you may say "Oh big deal, just get a new headset". I disagree highly with that statement for one reason, I hate the new xbox headsets. Who ever had the idea to move the mute button from the area near my thumbs to up on my chest is as absolute idiot. In what way, at all, does that make any sense? Anyway, back to what I was saying. I headed over to Ebay and searched for the headset that I wanted. Sure enough, there is a company out there that makes the old headsets for only $5 each. Game Infinity makes the headsets, and for $5 each it is a great deal. I did myself a favor and bought four just incase there was another incident with my cat. Lesson learned: Keep wires hidden!

Use Your Mic!

This is more of an opinion on gaming than it is a request. Please, Xbox Players, use your microphone. I don't care what your excuse is, it comes with your Xbox. If you are playing a team game, use your microphone. You are in no way helping the team by yelling at the TV and complaining why someone didn't listen to you. If you want to play team games, then use your mic. If you don't want to use your mic, then go play some game that doesn't require team efforts. When you don't use your mic, all you do is aggravate your teammates. Communication is the key to winning, so do the rest of the community a favor and use your mic. To anyone who says "but my mic broke" go on ebay and buy a new one, or go to Gamestop and get one. They are only $15. Please and thank you as always. Feel free to leave a comment about this topic.

Halo Reach: Review

As requested, the following is my review of Halo Reach. After having the game for almost a week now, and playing almost non stop, I can say that this is an amazing game. Let's break it down, shall we?

Campaign: Reach's campaign is one of the best I have ever played. It does a great job of bringing the series together. After four Halo games, Reach finally gives you the full view of what happened on the planet Reach. Bungie tries to make the story more personal by showing the faces of the characters, however I didn't really feel a huge connection to them. Although it was a valid attempt, I think they fell short of making a connection. On the other hand, there is the enemy AI. The enemy AI is more vicious then ever. Bungie did a phenomenal job of making the campaign challenging. Not to mention the fact that as you add more friends to the campaign, the more difficult it becomes. There were some down sides though, such as checkpoints. Checkpoints can sometimes be far apart, and can be given at bad times. In addition, the friendly AI is really unintelligent, and at most times are not helpful in any way. They can't drive vehicles because they will cause you to die, and they can't be a vehicle gunner because they hardly ever shoot. If anything, the friendly AI is just there for effect and motivational support, they don't do much else other then die. The campaign tries to convey the feeling that you are a part of something big, but up until the very end of the game I really did feel that way. The campaign is a great mix of storytelling and a test of player's skill.

Multiplayer: Once again, Halo brings back one of the best multiplayer experiences. Searching for games is simple, and joining friends is just as easy. The experience is very fluid, and seems to never stop. Once your game is finished, you are awarded credits, ways of buying items to customize your character, and then you are moved straight into another game. There are three types of matchmaking options: Social, Cooperative, and The Arena. Social is for people who are just playing to have fun. Cooperative is misleading by name because it is not really team battle. Instead, it is just Firefight playlists, Firefight being a game type that pins you and some friends against endless waves of enemies. Finally, there is Arena, also known as "Ranked" as you are given a seasonal rank for your hard work. The higher your rank, the better you are. Although I have only played the first two of the matchmaking options, it is easy to see that Bungie did their best to serve everyone's needs. However, there is two down sides to multiplayer, the first being the ban system. Bungie has instated a temporary ban system for quitters to penalize them for leaving the game, however this system has been banning people who lost connection, had a power outage, etc. The second is the betrayal system. It is meant to keep people from ruining the game, while it is actually ruining the game for people. Accidentally killing your team mate can happen at times, and usually it will give the team mate an option to boot the player or forgive them. In most cases they are booting the players, ruining the game for that person. Although multiplayer is an awesome experience, it is ruined slightly by some broken game mechanics. Knowing Bungie, they will address these issues in the near future.

Graphics: The graphics in Reach are very nice when compared to Halo 3 and Halo 3 ODST. However, compared to other games now a days, these graphics are not as good as they can be. Don't get me wrong, these graphics are a huge improvement over previous games, but in my opinion they could be better compared to today's standards. Reach does a good job of handling the graphics for the most part, though at times you will experience frame rate issues when playing Campaign. It is a bit of a shame because when your in the moment, the last thing you want is your game to lag. Overall, the graphics are nice, but as stated before they could be better.

Music: I tip my hat to Marty O'Donnell, he has really outdone himself this time. The music in Reach is amazing, and you can tell that Marty put his heart into this one (not to say that he hasn't done so before). Reach's music is probably the best in the industry right now, the music fits perfectly every time it is played. The music really helps convey the feeling of the moment, which the story itself fell short of conveying.

Overall: Don't let the little things about Reach stop you from buying this game. On top of everything mentioned here is the outstanding amount of customization available. For example, Forge World goes beyond the limits of what you would expect in a map editor. In addition, the armory makes every player unique beyond how they act and sound. When you are done reading this review, you should go buy this game now if you don't already have it. I don't like to use numbers when rating a game, as I feel they don't give you the right idea of how great, or horrid, a game can be. I review with my words, and that in my opinion is enough to convey my thoughts on this game. Halo Reach is amazing and you should have this game on your shelf.

A Series Reaches Its End

After ten years, one of the most well known video game series has come to an end. The Halo series, which started back in 2000, has gathered many followers and has grown immensely in popularity. Halo Reach marks the end to the saga that revolutionized first person shooters, and the game industry as a whole. Making a full circle, Halo Reach ends the series by starting off before it actually begins. Reach is a prequel to Halo: Combat Evolved, making an easy transition to anyone wishing to start the series now. Reach provides players with an unprecedented amount of customizability, allowing it to live on past the time when Bungie, the creators of the Halo series, will be producing for it. Eventually, it will be the players who produce for Reach's multiplayer, and Bungie will only be selecting the maps to put into the playlists. In addition to an amazing amount of customization, there is also three different ways to play online. You can play with your friends in campaign with up to four players. Then there is the online, which the Halo series is known for. And finally, there is Firefight, a fan favorite from Halo 3:ODST which has been revamped for Reach's standards. Each of these modes allows you to earn credits, which in turn can be used to unlock armor pieces to customize the player's look. As you can see, there is no wrong way to go about playing Reach. I don't want to mention anything about the campaign, as I don't wish to ruin anything for you, but I can say it won't disappoint Halo fans. Bungie has done a fantastic job with the franchise, and although they won't be making Halo anymore, their future games are sure to be good! If you would like me to write a review of this game, please leave a comment saying so. I am off to kick some Covenant butt!

Streaming: Mac to 360

It is probably a little known fact that Microsoft's hit console, the Xbox 360, can have music, photos, and more, streamed to it from a Mac. However, it can be done with a program called Connect 360. Here is how:

1. Download Connect360 from the link above.
2. Mount the .dmg and install the program.
3. Open up System Preferences and look under the category of "Other".
4. Click on Connect360. If it says "System Preferences must quit and reopen to run this application" just click "OK". This is because the program runs in a 32 Bit mode and your Operating System runs at 64 Bit.
5. Follow the instruction provided with in the application on how to link your Xbox 360.

Once linked, you can stream you music, photos, and more to your console. The only downside is the free version of this software only allows you a certain amount of items to be streamed. If you would like the full version, you will have to pay 20$.
